NCCA-MetLife Foundation Creativity Matters Symposia
NCCA has successfully completed the NCCA-MetLife Foundation Symposia Series.  The 3-year series focuses on topics including: Lifelong Learning through the arts, Civic Engagement and Intergenerational Programs and Health and Wellness through the arts rotating through Miami, FL; San Francisco, CA; and Washington, DC each year.  Sponsored by the MetLife Foundation and NAMM Foundation, the symposia series provided interactive lectures, workshops as well as resource development tools for professionals in arts organizations, health oriented organizations, aging services, social work, caregiving, teaching artists, art therapy, music therapy and recreational therapy from across the country. 

Though this symposia series is complete, we are very excited to announce a new MetLife sponsored initiative soon!    

 

NCCA – MetLife Foundation Creativity Matters! Health, Wellness & The Arts
April 28-29, 2011
Contemporary Jewish Museum
San Francisco, CA

The National Center for Creative Aging will present a symposia at the Contemporary Jewish Museum focusing on museum, theater, music and dance programs that promote health and wellness for people from active to frail.  The day will kick off with Michael Patterson, Co-founder of MindRAMP & Associates with his keynote, the Sciences of Creativity and Cognitive Enhancement, covering research on creative engagement and brain fitness.  Following Patterson’s keynote will be a best-practice panel featuring programs from across the country including: MoMA Programs in Art and Dementia, and the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange MetLife Foundation Healthy Living Initiatives.  The second half of the day will include intensive small-group workshops led by Mind Alert Winners in Creativity and Aging in programs includingSongwriting Works, Stagebridge Senior Theater, Kairos Dance Theater, and Elders Share the Arts.  Don’t miss out on a chance to see a primer performance by the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange choreographed specifically to showcase the benefits of creative engagement in healthy aging!

NCCA – MetLife Foundation Creativity Matters! Lifelong Learning Through the Arts

This day-long symposia will feature a blue ocean summit on lifelong learning showcasing how the arts can be a tool in creating learning opportunities across the lifespan as well as build social and economic capital in the community.  Keynote speaker Dr. Peter Whitehouse, neurologist and gerontologist at Case Western Reserve University and co-founder of The Intergenerational School will discuss his groundbreaking work in Cleveland, OH.  Following Dr. Whitehouse will be a best practice panel with programs from around the country including theater, choral, intergenerational arts and music making programs.  The day will conclude with an open discussion on topics including: resource and policy development along with new business models for access to arts education.

NCCA-MetLife Foundation Creativity Matters! Civic Engagement through Intergenerational Gardening and Arts Programs
August 29, 2011 - Canceled due to hurricane Irene
Miami, FL

Nutrition and healthy living is a hot button issue in communities across the country all the way to the White House where it has become Michelle Obama’s primer initiative inspiring her Let’s Move campaign. Intergenerational community gardens can be an engaging way to improve the nutrient, health and social well-being of all communities from rural to urban. The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens with the National Center for Creative Aging (NCCA) will present a symposium focusing on intergenerational gardens that cultivate green communities and improve the health and wellbeing of people of all ages.  Garden projects featured will include those in schools, museums, health centers and community spaces.  Experts in garden design, nutrition, accessibility and intergenerational program development will present best practices and hands on activities.
