CCA-NC, North Carolina’s First-Ever Creative Aging Symposium
May 6-7, 2010
The growing awareness of human potential in later life provides a unique opportunity for artists and healthcare professionals to proactively incorporate creative programs into the lives of older adults. The Creative Aging Symposium offers people in both professions ways to embrace creativity and advance culture change in aging service environments. We must find new ways to improve the quality of life for older adults of all ability levels as this population continues to “boom” and demand for meaningful opportunities increases.
This highly interactive two-day symposium will raise awareness of resources available at the national, state and local levels during the general session on Thursday. Friday’s workshops will offer experiential concurrent sessions providing valuable hands-on tools to encourage innovative thought and implementation of new creative programs.

This site makes available all the content from the recent publication, Meet Me: Making Art Accessible to People with Dementia, and also contains new content, including special multimedia materials pertaining to the Museum's overall programming in art and dementia. On this new site you can:

- Read interviews with experts in the field of art, aging and Alzheimer's disease
- Learn about the findings from an evidence-based research study conducted by NYU School of Medicine to evaluate the efficacy of the Meet Me at MoMA program

In addition, the site offers Spanish translations of guides and art modules. In the future MoMA will continue to enhance the site and will post information regarding upcoming conference presentations and trainings. Their hope is that this website will serve as a useful tool for those working to enhance the lives of people with dementia and their caregivers.
UWM's Center on Age & Community (CAC) is Embarking on The Penelope Project
This 3-year project that uses the power of myth to transform myths of aging and long term care. Collaborating with Luther Manor Health Center and Sojourn Theatre, the team will facilitate conversations with families, staff, and residents at Luther Manor about the myth of Penelope from Homer's Odyssey. The discussions will be shaped into a play that will be staged inside Luther Manor and webcast out to broader audiences. The discussion format and the play itself will be transformed into teaching tools to help others facilitate similar discussions, and to teach a wide range of students about the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of those who live and work in nursing homes. The Penelope Project is supported with funding from the Wisconsin Arts Board, the Wisconsin Humanities Council, and the Helen Bader Foundation.
CAC is also in the midst of translating their popular TimeSlips storytelling training into an online format, and expanding their website to enable more social networking among storytellers and facilitators. TimeSlips Online is supported by the Extendicare Foundation, the Helen Bader Foundation, and the Retirement Research Foundation.
CAC is based in the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.
ARTZ: Artists for Alzheimer's Documentary Release
ARTZ and the Hearthstone Alzheimer's Foundation are featured in a new documentary about non-pharmacologic therapies for Alzheimer's disease, narrated by Olivia de Havillad and titled, "I Remember Better When I Paint." This film profiles several initiatives and facilities that are using drawing, painting and museum visits as effective therapies, including the ARTZ program at the Louvre and the ARTZ Museum Network of Massachusetts. Experts from Boston University, George Washington University, the University of Chicago and Mount Sinai Hosptial testify to the benefits of these new approaches, which dramatically alter the way we view the disease. Produced by French Connection Films and the Hilgos Foundation, this compelling documentary is now available on DVD. A special screening of the film for Boston University students and alumni will take place at the Tribeca Cinemas in New York City in March.
