Art Classes Therapeutic for Nitro Seniors

The Nitro Senior Center in Charleston, West Virginia boasts a great art class which provides mastery, social engagement, and therapeutic aspects to its participants.  After Dorothy Mannon lost her husband and then her son, she turned to art.  It has given her the social component she missed, as she said, “We’re just like one big family.  Everybody cheers each other up…if you come in for any length of time, we treat you like anyone else.”  Gaylie Doughty says the painting helps her with her Parkinson’s disease.  Some of the artists’ work are even featured at two local banks, where multiple pieces have sold.
