Connecting with Alzheimer’s Patients- Even in the Latest Stages of the Disease

Four activities can effectively reach Alzheimer’s patients at any stage: visits by a child, visits from a pet, listening to or playing music and observing or creating artwork. Children can reach and interact with patients at a deep emotional level. Like children, pets can have a similar effect because of their unconditional love. “One of the joys of persons with dementia that seems to remain intact, untouched over time, is the joy created by a visit from a pet,” says Susan Gilster, Executive Director of Alois Alzheimer Center. Music and can affect patients’ health and social function allowing them to express themselves and connect with others.
