2011 Beautiful Minds Winner, John Guider, Making His Way Down the Great Mississippi River
NCCA has been keeping a close eye 2011 Beautiful Minds winner John Guider as he makes his way down the great Mississippi River. Since we last checked on this modern day Huckleberry Finn, John has faced some obstacles on the water. With severe storms and the rising river a major concern during the first few weeks of July, the National Coast Guard put a ban on any recreational boating on the Mississippi river in order to prevent damage to saturated banks and flood walls.
Unable to sail for several days John took advantage of the solitude while also experiencing his surroundings and getting to know the people in the marinas where he docks. The amount of kindness and generosity from his new friends was extraordinary -- From Gary Dominy, who took John out by boat to his truck and drove into town so he could have a decent breakfast to Mr. Hamm who runs Hamm's Holiday Marina, making him feel at home and helping him get back on the water. "I've got a lot of goodness to be giving to pay off all the good that's been given to me" says John.
John arrived in Havana, IL on July 29 where he is preparing for the 120 mile journey to Grafton, IL.
