Fifth Annual International Conference on Positive Aging

The Fifth Annual International Conference on Positive Aging is a highly interactive gathering of diverse leaders who are shaping a dynamic future for older adults throughout the world. The conference is hosted by the Institute for Social Innovation at Fielding Graduate University. The keynote speaker this year is Mary Catherine Bateson, a writer and cultural anthropologist, Faculty Emerita at George Mason University. Once the conference is started plenary sessions are offered in creativity, wellness, community, and life transitions.

Join in on this virtual seminar hosted by the Family Caregiver Alliance will be led by two professionals in the aging field, Drs. Gay Hanna, Executive Director at the National Center for Creative Aging and Anne Basting, Executive Director, Associate Professor, Center on Age and Community; Founder, Timeslips Storytelling. They will discuss (1) the importance of increasing awareness among arts and aging professionals, family caregivers and others about the link between the arts and wellness in older adults; and (2) TimeSlips, a current program which has been effective with older adults with dementia. Ladies Rock Camp 2011

Ladies Rock Camp is a weekend day camp for adult women to let loose for the weekend and play music together. Learn drums, bass, keyboards, vocals, or guitar, or improve youre skills: all levels of skill and experience are welcome, including total beginners. Meanwhile you'll also form a band and work together to write an original song that your band will play on stage at the showcase on Sunday. Tuition is $390 and benefits Rock 'n' Roll camp for Girls; Ladies Rock Campers of 2007-10 collectively generated over $100,000
Relationship Centered and Experiential Training in Nonverbal Communication

Dance / movement therapists Donna Newman-Bluestein and Meg Chang will introduce a model of relationship-centered and experiential training in nonverbal communication for caregivers of people with dementia. Participants will practice elements of nonverbal communication and discuss applications to nursing care. A panel from Friends Village including social worker Patience Oakes, activities person Linda Price, and nurse assistant Tabitha Gifford will share stories describing the effects of the training on them and on their relationships with persons with dementia.
