"We shall not cease exploring
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time."
- T.S. Eliot, The Four Quartets
At the National Center for Creative Aging (NCCA), we are constantly exploring the vital relationship between creative expression and healthy aging. This year we lost a great explorer, Dr. Gene D. Cohen, whose life was committed to the field of aging and improving the health of older persons. As Dr. Cohen was fond of saying, this field is a vast blue ocean, referring to the uncharted territory and uncontested market space created by a paradigm shift. With your support, NCCA will continue the rich legacy of Dr. Cohen and his pioneering effort to improve the quality of life for older people, shifting the paradigm of aging from problem to potential.
Some of the highlights of this year's many accomplishments are:
-
The Gene D. Cohen, MD, PhD, Research Award in Creative Aging
In partnership with the Gerontological Society of America, this annual award recognizes a professional whose research clearly provides evidence that creative activities and behaviors, particularly in the arts, can maintain and even improve the physical, emotional and cognitive well being of older adults. Dr. Gene D. Cohen posthumously became the first recipient of this award for his work which inspires us to approach longevity asking what wonders can be achieved, not in spite of age, but because of age. -
NCCA Distance Learning Programs
Through a generous grant from The NAMM Foundation, NCCA provided webinars on topics including: Research in Creative Aging; Best-Practice Programs; Resource Development as well as the Dr. Gene D. Cohen, MD, PhD Legacy Webinar Series highlighting his extensive research in the creative aging field. -
Creativity Matters: Arts and Aging in America Symposia Series
Through the generous sponsorship of the MetLife Foundation, NCCA brought together hundreds of professionals in the national and international arts and aging fields to learn about up-to-date research and best-practice programs in the fields of creativity and aging, inspiring participants to bring that knowledge to their own communities creative a positive and creative environment for older adults. The symposia took place in Miami Fl; Washington, DC; and San Francisco, CA around the topics of Lifelong Learning; Health & Wellness; and Civic Engagement. -
Creativity Matters: Community Forums
Through the generous sponsorship of the National Endowment for the Arts, NCCA held four community forums linking artists and arts organizations to health, education, and social services in Cleveland, OH; Tampa Bay, FL; Milwaukee, WI; and Seattle & the Olympic Peninsula, WA.
When donating to NCCA, you are building a national movement - a sea change - where opportunities are emerging for older people to vitally engaged in sharing their legacy through the arts. A small, tax free contribution of $10 or $25 would significantly impact the maintenance and expansion of NCCA's programs and service to you and your community.
