Program Title
Villa Musica's Creative Aging Program
Program Summary

Villa Musica’s Creative Aging Program is open to all older San Diegans seeking a creative musical community to develop their musical understanding and/or ability in a nurturing environment. Villa Musica offers drum circles, Sally’s Symphonic Discoveries (in which participants learn about symphonic music and attend a concert of the San Diego Symphony), and a singing class (where participants sing to oldies). Music classes are taught by professional teaching artists, and there is a concert for participants’ families and friends at the end of each session.

Program Background and History

Villa Musica is San Diego’s community music center, enabling people of all ages and backgrounds to discover, explore, and enhance their music skills as part of a network of musicians, educators, and lovers of music. Founded as a non-profit corporation in November 2005, Villa Musica is a vibrant gathering place where people can come together to take music lessons, play in an ensemble, or participate in a workshop. Villa Musica seeks to create a focal point for music education in San Diego, where students and teachers can meet to exchange ideas and experience the joy of making music. By creating a supportive and creative environment for the study of music, Villa Musica aims to inspire many San Diegans to embrace music-making as part of their lives.

The field of creative aging focuses on the beneficial and powerful role of the arts in enhancing the quality of life of older adults and has gained significant recognition as an important contributor to positive aging efforts. Researchers are discovering that the aging brain is far more plastic than previously understood, and that structured learning—especially in the arts—can improve cognitive functioning and quality of life. Villa Musica began its Creative Aging Program in response to this research in September 2012. Villa Musica held focus groups throughout 2012 with local senior centers and organizations serving older adults to build a strong Creative Aging Program and has developed a partnership with the San Diego Symphony as a result of this program.

When developing your arts program, consider holding classes during the day, as many older people are not comfortable driving at night.
