Program Summary

Potomac Arts Academy of Fairfax, Virginia offers a piano class for adults 55 and older who are new to playing the instrument. The class is accessible to people with disabilities and is led by a professionally trained instructor who is skilled at working with people of varying levels and abilities. Piano Class for 55+ is a 10-week course that meets for one hour each week, and families are invited to attend the final class to hear an informal performance. Participants in h class learn basic music theory and begin to play the piano using an introductory text for adults. After completion of the beginning class, intermediate classes are available. The class served 20 participants in its first year.

Program Background and History

The Potomac Arts Academy is a vital part of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at George Mason University. It brings university-quality arts instruction to the local community, through innovative and inspiring music, theater, visual art, and computer gaming classes as well as a variety of special events and programs focused on teacher education and enrichment. The Potomac Arts Academy seeks to enrich the lives of community members of all ages, skill levels, and socio-economic backgrounds by providing the highest caliber of artistic instruction in an accessible and nurturing environment. Creating a strong bond between George Mason University faculty and students, professional artists/performers, and the surrounding communities, the academy seeks to ensure a vibrant future for the arts in our region and beyond.

Potomac Arts Academy developed Piano Class for 55+ in 2012 in tandem with Encore Chorale, a choral program based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, to address the needs of the community’s growing population of older adults.

Advice for Other Organizations Conducting Similar Programs

Arts organizations should consider offering programs specifically for older adults, as there is an increasing demand for high-quality arts programming to serve this population. Design the program specifically for older adults, as there are program design components unique to this audience and different from programs that serve younger generations.
