Program Summary

Programs of the Genesee Center for the Arts & Education of Rochester, New York provide intentional group learning as well as casual access to facilities and equipment for art-making activities. The center serves around 1,000 people a year through diverse program offerings in a wide range of visual arts areas including: Community Darkroom, Genesee Pottery, and the Printing and Book Arts Center. The center offers classes and workshops, rents studio space to individuals, and exhibits work in galleries. The classes are open to all members of the community, and the facility is fully accessible. The center additionally offers a number of events to the general public including art exhibits and receptions and community events.

The Genesee Center for the Arts & Education allows people of all ages and abilities to learn and practice art-making. The center serves older, younger, established, and emerging artists who want to work in a community of artists. Each participant comes with a unique set of talents and interests and, through classes, studios, and galleries, is able to learn about and make art. The center conducts a year-long artist-in-residence program within Genesee Pottery, which primarily attracts (but is not limited to) BFA and MFA candidates. A core demographic at the center is second career artists—those who need a stress-relief from their everyday work and lives, those who want to have their voice heard through their art, those suffering from health issues, and young people who are just learning about how art can be an important part of their lives.
