Program Title
Joy Giver Program/Junior Joy Giver Program
Program Summary

Resounding Joy’s exemplary music therapy staff train volunteers (called Joy Givers) to provide a social musical environment to older adult community members (known as Joy Receivers) through recreational and therapeutic music visits. These visits can be with individuals and groups, and include but are not limited to: singing, music listening (live or recorded), rhythm activities, and/or instrument performance.

Resounding Joy’s collaborative relationships with community and faith-based organizations allows for consistent referrals of Joy Receivers. Our Joy Givers provide visits to these groups and individuals within the older adult community. Joy Receivers include older adults in the community in a variety of settings including in the home. The Joy Giver/Joy Receiver program is a foundational program of Resounding Joy and has been active in the San Diego community since 2004. The program serves approximately 500 older adults annually along a spectrum from well elders to those in memory care.

Program Background and History

Resounding Joy's mission is to promote social, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being through music. In an effort to create a strong community, the program enrich the lives of individuals through the implementation of recreational, supportive, and therapeutic music experiences. Resounding Joy brings the healing power of making music to seniors, homeless people, active service members, veterans, military families, teen parents and their children, and children and infants who are ill, hospitalized, and/or home-bound. Since our inception in 2004, Resounding Joy has served over 65,000 people throughout San Diego County; serving nearly 15,000 people in 2013 alone. In addition to providing direct services, Resounding Joy develops, publishes, and continues to refine evidence-based curriculum that can be replicated.

Program-Specific Research and Key Findings

Staff takes pre and post scales for the majority of programs, subjective measures, anecdotal data (i.e. testimonials), and final program evaluations. Research is not currently publicized online, data available upon request.

Program-Specific Assessment and Evaluation

The staff conducts multiple evaluations throughout the duration of the program including clinical observations to modify, refine, and improve the program based on the changing needs of the clients served. Evaluations consist of interviews, individual assessments, attendance numbers, and group assessment.
